Cougar Football Newsletter - 02/2009

mattballardAnother season of Cougar Football is just around the corner! The Cougars will be competing in the newly altered PAL Ocean Division this year. Our preseason schedule includes a three way scrimmage vs. Independence and Live Oak.  Then we will play Homestead H.S. (week #0) away at Cupertino (may be changed to home), a Bye week #1, Monterey H.S. (week #2) away, Mills H.S. (week #3) home and last will be El Camino H.S. at home (week #4).  Our Ocean League competitors will be San Mateo, Carlmont, Menlo, South City, and Burlingame.  Week #10 will be our rival game vs. Terra Nova, away. The Varsity Staff will remain much the same, Matt Ballard as Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, Keith Holden as Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator, and Don Dias as the Offensive Line and Special Teams Coach. Working with them will be James Barry (RB/DB), Steve Terraszas (WR), Gary Torre (DL), Kevin Frink (P/K), Ricky Simms (DB) and Gary Ballard (TE). Barret Krieger will return as the Frosh/Soph Head Coach.  Working with him is Mike Krieger, Rocky Perry and Rob Martin.

Winter morning weight training and agilities sessions have already begun. All students interested in playing are encouraged to come.  Monday through Friday: 6am to 7am. Cougar Football wants its players to compete in other HMBHS sports as well, so we’re happy to work within those schedules.

Spring practice will be May 18th to May 29th (3pm-5pm). A “touch” football game vs. the graduating senior players (“The Senior Game”) is planned for the final Friday practice. During the summer there will be a Weight/ Agility/ Conditioning Class offered. (Semester 1: Dates TBA, Semester 2: Dates TBA). Class runs from 7am to 12 noon and students can earn a full year of elective credit.   For students having to take academic summer school classes, morning weight lifting sessions will go on throughout the summer (M,T,Th,F: 6:00am- 7:30am). We will also attend football camps and summer passing leagues (Stanford, CSM & Menlo College). For the fifth year the HMB High School Coaching Staff will also be hosting a youth football camp for players between the ages of 6 and 14, dates TBA; usually last week of July.

All activities will be an essential part to our program’s success this year, as well as the years to come.  Our season will begin Friday, August 14th at 12pm at the high school. There will be Frosh/Soph and Varsity double day practices (12-2pm & 4pm-6pm).  Students will need a completed physical form (yellow) and emergency/Code of Conduct (green) to participate; cards can be obtained in front office.  A successful program requires dedication and commitment throughout the year, not just in August. The coaching staff will, and does, appreciate all the parent support and help in encouraging, and respecting your student-athlete’s commitment to their team.

As always, funding is an important and essential issue to our teams.  A football program has a lot of needs, which always run over the given budget.  Items needed run from as inexpensive as mouth pieces to as costly as football gear and field equipment.  Any donations you, or a business would like to give, would be much appreciated by the coaches, student-athletes and the entire school.  Obviously, earning money is not what’s truly important about our sport, but having up to date, high quality equipment is something these hardworking players have earned and deserve.  Make donations to the “Cardiac Club” and return to Coach Ballard.

The entire coaching staff and team are looking forward to an exciting and successful 2009 season.
