Varsity Coaches

Head Coach: Matt Ballard 6th year Head Coach / 10 years coaching
Head Varsity Coach - Defensive Coordinator
Head Varsity Coach Matt Ballard is a returning Half Moon Bay High School graduate (1992). While in high school, he played both linebacker and fullback earning All-League honors at both positions. He and Keith Holden were senior captains on their Championship teams. After leaving Half Moon Bay, he attended University of California Davis where he earned a degree in history and played 4 years for the Aggies as a D-Tackle. He earned two varsity letters at Davis and coached one year while earning his teaching credential at Chapman University. Previously, he was head coach for the HMBHS Frosh-Soph team. This is his 9th year on Cougar Hill. Ballard teaches Physical Education and is the Athletic Director at HMBHS. In 2005, Ballard was named Coach of the Year by the Peninsula Athletic League, The San Mateo County Times, the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco 49ers (The Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Year Award).

Keith Holden 6th Year / 13 years coaching
Assistant Head Varsity Coach - Offensive Coordinator
Assistant Varsity Coach Keith Holden is a graduate of Half Moon Bay High School (1992). He played on the Cougar Championship teams of 1990 and 1991, playing both offensive and defensive line. He attended CSM where he played for the Bulldogs and then transferred to Whittier College in southern California where he played offensive line. At Whittier, he earned his degree in Sociology and his teaching credential. He returned to Half Moon Bay High School two years ago as a Special Education teacher and football coach. This marks his 13th year in coaching.

Jamie Barry 6th year / 9 years coaching
Assistant Varsity Coach – Running Backs  and Linebackers
A former graduate of Terra Nova, Barry played Linebacker and Running Back at Terra Nova High School.  He was an All League and All County selection for the Tigers. Barry is a native of Pacifica and works for PG&E. He played high school football at the same time that Ballard and Holden played, and had many competitive rival games. 

Kevin Frink 8th year
Assistant Varsity Coach - Defensive Tackles
Coach Frink is in his fifth year with the HMBHS program and coaches the defensive line. A former alumnus of Half Moon Bay High School, Frink earned two varsity letters starting at running back and linebacker for the football team. Frink is a native of Half Moon Bay and when he is not coaching, he works for the City of Half Moon Bay.

Don Dias 27th year / 33 years coaching
Assistant Varsity Coach -  Offensive lineman and Special Teams
Coach Dias is a Half Moon Bay football legend who has coached most Cougars, including Frink, Ballard, Holden and Chee. Dias has coached with Jack Coolidge and Neal McNevin on several Cougar Championship teams: ’90, ’91, ’92 & ’93; with CCS appearences from 1989 to 1994. The Cougars were incredibly fortunate to get Coach Dias back last year and plan to keep him where he belongs. Prior to his return, Coach Dias was at Archbishop Riordan H.S. from 1998 to 2003 were they won a championship in 2000. He is a graduate of Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois and is a Vietnam Veteran.

Steve Terraszas 6th year - 1st year with varsity
Assistant Frosh-Soph Coach - Receivers and Defensive End
Coach Steve Terraszas grew up in Foster City and attended San Mateo High School. After attending CSM for two years he transferred to California State University at Sacramento receiving a degree in Psychology and Business Administration. He played football in both Pop Warner and in high school and was a player/coach for the defensive line in intramural football for two years. He and his wife, Betsy, and their three children moved to El Granada in 2002 from Vacaville. He has long wanted to coach football and knows that coaching at Half Moon Bay High School will be a wonderful way to become involved in the community. Coach Terraszas also coaches baseball with Magagnini at HMBHS.

Richard Herbert 2nd Year - Assistant Varsity Coach
Running Backs and Linebackers
Richard played on last season’s PAL and CCS Championship team as a running back and linebacker. Early in the year, he severely injured his knee, tearing three of four ligaments. Refusing to give up his senior year, Richard came back week #8 to play a key role in beating Capuchino for the PAL Championship. He then helped lead the Cougars through playoffs and the CCS Championship! Richard earned the Jack Coolidge Award by epitomizing what Cougar Pride is all about. The Cougars will lose Herbert in mid-September as he heads to Cal Poly to attend school.

Nick Colvin 1st Year - Assistant Varsity Coach
QB’s and Defensive Backs
Nick is another HMBHS graduate from the class of ’05. He was a PAL 2nd Team All League QB. In 2004 he orchestrated one of the best final comeback drives in HMB history to beat Schurr HS from L.A. 17-16.

Frosh/Soph Coaches

Barrett Krieger
Head Frosh-Soph Coach - Offensive Coordinator
Barret moved to HMB in 1973 while in fifth grade and attended El Granada and Cunha schools. He started 9th grade at HMBHS, moved to Pittsburgh PA, then returned to finish last half of his senior year at HMBHS. Kreiger attended CSM and then transferred to San Francisco State University where he graduated with a degree in Earth Sciences. Barret started coaching during college years as a volunteer for Pop Warner and HMBHS F/S football teams. He has coached 21 of the last 24 years at four different high schools, always returning to HMB. This will be his fifth stint at HMB, having been an assistant and head coach of both varsity and F/S teams. Football highlights would include league championships at the F/S and Varsity levels at Lowell, Half Moon Bay and Mills high schools, coaching the Northern California high school all-star team vs Kentucky and Minnesota in Australia, watching our successful Coastside teams (including his son's) in the regional playoffs, arguing, laughing and coaching with his brother Mike and rooting for the Steelers over the years winning their Super Bowls. Seeing kids succeed after high school is his biggest thrill - whether they continue playing football or not. Kreiger lives in Moss Beach with his wife Sonja, son Austin and daughter Veronica, who all make sacrifices enabling him to continue coaching. Kreiger's parents always served our youth sports organizations and Cougar Boosters. They continue to support his  coaching endeavors and have always been terrific - Barret says "thanks mom and dad!!"

Mike Krieger
Assistant Frosh-Soph Coach - Quarterbacks
Mike is a graduate of HMBHS and UC Berkeley with a degree in Legal Studies. An alumnus of HMBHS, Mike earned two varsity letters for the football team and went on to play baseball and rugby at UC Berkeley. He started coaching with his brother Barrett in 1990. This will be Mike’s third time on Cougar Hill, having been an assistant coach of both Varsity and F/S teams previously. Coaching highlights include F/S League Championships at HMBHS and Lowell High School, and winning the 2003 and 2004 PAL Championships while coaching at Mills High School. Mike lives in Montara with his wife Barbara and daughters Morgan and Brooke.

Rocky Perry 2nd season at HMBHS, 17 seasons coaching Football
Assistant Frosh-Soph Coach – Offensive and Defensive Lineman
Coach Perry played at Bellarmine College Prep. in San Jose, CA. At BCP, Captain, All Frosh Team, All WCAL 1971 & 1973, three time BCP Most Valuable Lineman. CSU Sacramento "Hornets"- Three year Varsity starter/team captain 1974-77. Perry also competed collegiately in Judo and Powerlifting. His major was Phys. Ed, minor Coaching. Minor League Professional - Sacramento Buffalos of the California Football League, playing three years for Sacramento, he was named to the All Star CFL team in 1977/1978/1979 and played 3 additional years 1980-82, part time (Napa Valley Bears & Antioch Hornets), while working as a Peace Officer in SF.

Coach Perry is agent/owner of Rock Solid Legal Services of HMB. Coach Perry has a Masters Degree in Acupucture/Oriental Medical Arts(SF College of Oriental Medicine), CA certified Acupressure Therapy, Sports Massage Therapy and Herbology.

Rob Martin
Assistant Frosh-Soph Coach - Receivers
Coach Martin has lived on the coastside for the last 20 years with his wife Carolyn while raising his daughter Maeve and son Kellan. Robert was a volunteer coach for Coastside Pop Warner before taking a varsity coaching position with Barrett and Mike Krieger at Mills High School for two years. At Mills, Martin helped the Vikings win a league championship while assisting with the offensive and defensive lines, and special teams. After a two-year hiatus to watch son Kellan compete on the HMBHS Varsity Team and win a CCS Championship, Robert returns to HMBHS as a coach on the F/S team.
