Win Over San Mateo HS

Both Half Moon Bay football teams opened PAL Ocean League play on Friday night at San Mateo High School. The Varsity team improved their record to 4-1, 1-0 in league, with a 29-20 win over the Bearcats on their Homecoming Night. The Cougars scored on their opening drive with a 12 play drive that culminated in a touchdown run by Mark Myren. The Cougars recovered a San Mateo turnover on the next play and converted it into another touchdown a play later on a Shane Acton pass to Pablo Gutierrez to make the score 15-0 in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Cougars scored again on another Myren touchdown run and the Cougars enjoyed a 22-6 halftime lead.

The Cougars then took the opening second half kickoff and marched down the field on an 11 play drive for a touchdown on an Acton run to make the score 29-6. San Mateo added two touchdowns to make the score 29-20 but missed an important extra point to keep it a two score game. The Half Moon Bay defense stiffened and the kept the Bearcats out of the end zone the rest of the night.

The JV football team lost their first league game to the Bearcats by the score of 14-6. The young Cougars had opportunities to score but could not convert and committed some costly turnovers and penalties. The JV record is 3-2, 0-1.
