Skull is in Our House!

The Varsity football team won a classic rivalry game on Friday Night over our arch rivals the Terra Nova Tigers. The 49-48 last second victory brought the "Skull" back to Half Moon Bay and gave our 2014 team bragging rights for life. On Senior Night at John Francis Field the Cougars found themselves down 14-0 after the first quarter. In the second quarter Anthony DeMartini scored a touchdown and after a failed 2pt. conversion the score was 14-6. The Tigers answered with another touchdown to regain their two score lead at 21-6. Before halftime Matt Spigelman added a touchdown for HMB and the score was 21-12.

In the third quarter the Cougars came out fast and scored a touchdown in 2 plays when Shane Acton ran 40 yards for a score and the Cougars had cut the lead to 21-19. The Tigers came back with TD to regain the lead at 28-19. Terra Nova added another score and after 3 quarters had the lead at 35-19. In the 4th quarter the Cougars scored on another Spigelman touchdown run to make the score 35-27. The Tigers scored again to make the score 42-27. Later in the 4th quarter Acton threw to Spigelman for another Cougars' touchdown and the score was 42-35. On the next HMB possession the Cougars tied the game at 42-42 when DeMartini ran 37 yards for a TD. Late in the 4th quarter Terra Nova scored but missed the extra point for a 48-42 lead. With 2 minutes left in the game the Cougars took the ball at their own 20 yard line and moved down the field converting 2 fourth down plays to keep the drive alive. The biggest conversion coming when Acton found James Cartwright for a 24 yard completion and a first and goal at the Tigers 3 yard line. On fourth and goal at the 1 yard line and 1.8 seconds left in the game DeMartini tied the game at 48-48. Pierre Salinas kicked the extra point for the Cougars first lead of the game. After an exciting kick off coverage the Cougars had a hard fought and exciting 49-48 victory. It was a great celebration on the field and awesome support from our student body in the stands. The win improved the Cougars record to 7-3 overall and sets HMB up for next week's first round of the CCS Playoffs. The location and time will be determined and announced early this week.

The JV team played well and had a 4th quarter lead of 21-20 over Terra Nova before giving up a late touchdown. The potential game winning drive fell short and the young Cougars dropped a 26-21 decision to the Tigers. The JV team finished their season at 6-4. Congratulations to all the players and coaches of the JV team for a successful and winning season.
