Playoff Hopes Still Alive

The Half Moon Bay Varsity football team got back in the win column on Thursday Night at John Francis Field with a 45-34 victory over Woodside High School. The win improved the Cougars record to 5-3 and 2-2 in league play. The big win also kept the Cougars CCS playoff hopes alive. The Cougars scored on their first play from scrimmage when Matt Spigelman connected with Brandon Inglis on an 85 yard double pass play touchdown. After the Cougars converted a 2pt. play they had an early 8-0 lead. The Wildcats came back with a touchdown of their own and the score was 8-7. Pierre Salinas kicked a 30 yard field goal to give the Cougars an 11-7 lead. After Woodside again took the lead at 14-11, the Cougars answered back with a Shane Acton to James Cartwright touchdown pass and the Cougars had an 18-14 lead. Both teams again exchanged touchdowns with the Cougars scoring on a Toby Leonardos run. Woodside scored twice in the quarter and took a 27-25 halftime lead. On the Cougars opening drive of the second half, HMB went on an 11 play touchdown drive scoring on an Acton to Cody James pass for 32-27 lead. Woodside scored again to regain the lead at 34-32. The Cougars offense went back to work on a 15 play drive scoring on a Matt Spigelman touchdown run. After a failed 2pt conversion the Cougars once again had the lead at 38-34. The Cougars scored again on their next possession when Acton ran 15 yards for a touchdown and the Cougars had a two score lead at 45-34. The Cougars defense held the Wildcats to 7 total plays in the second half and the Cougars ran out the clock to claim the victory.

The JV team also defeated Woodside High on Thursday afternoon. The win improved their record to 6-2 and 3-1 in league play. The win was somewhat dampened when Nick Dempsey suffered a broken leg during the game. All the players and coaches from both teams wish Nick and his family a speedy recovery.

Both teams will play their final road game of the regular season on Friday afternoon when they travel to Hillsdale High School to take on the Knights. The JV game will begin at 4:00 and the Varsity game will kickoff at 7:00. The players and coaches hope you will make the short road trip over the hill to cheer both teams on to a much needed victory.
