To All Cougars Football Families and Friends ,

The Half Moon Bay Cougars football teams began their seasons on Friday night when they hosted the annual four way scrimmage at John Francis Field. This year's participants were Carlmont High, El Camino High and Mission High School from San Francisco. The evening's action began with the JV team playing at 5:00. The JVs played well especially on defense where they limited the others teams' ability to sustain any drives down field. Head Coach Ronnie Ekis was especially pleased with the active and aggressive play of his defense.

The Varsity football team took the field at 7:00 and began with a spirited scrimmage against the El Camino Colts. The Cougars scored on their first three offensive possessions with a solid ground attack and positive production through the air. Shane Acton was especially accurate with his passing from both the pocket and on the run as he threw for two touchdowns against the Colts. The Cougars defense stifled the El Camino offense with their swarming hard hitting play.

The Cougars scrimmaged Carlmont in the second round and continued what they had started earlier by out hitting and out hustling the Scots. The third scrimmage of the evening was against Mission High from San Francisco. Mission provided a real test for the Cougars defense, especially the secondary. Mission's offense is a pass first run second style that likes to stretch the field and strives for big plays. Their quarterback is elusive and has a strong arm. This combination was a good learning experience for the Cougars second team defense. The Varsity team played well and was able to score twice against the Mission defense.

Both teams have continued to improve over the course of double days and the first week of after school practice. The teams will need to continue to work hard and get better this week as they prepare for their first pre-season game on the road against the Monterey High Toreadores. Monterey returns several starters on both sides of the ball and will be a real challenge for the Cougars. Kickoff for the JV game is scheduled for 5:15 with the Varsity game beginning at 7:30.

The Cougars have worked hard all off season and are extremely excited about this upcoming season and look forward to improving upon last year's record. The players and coaches hope to see your strong orange and black presence next Friday in Monterey.
