First Home Game Success

The Half Moon Bay Cougars football teams played their first home game of the 2014 season on Friday night against the Bruins of Santa Clara High School. It was a very successful night for the Cougars as both the JV and the Varsity teams won their games by a large margin. The Varsity team overcame a slow start and a 20-11 deficit to score 48 straight points on their way to a 59-27 victory. The Cougars accumulated 377 yards of rushing offense and controlled the second quarter with 3 touchdowns by Matt Spigelman. In the 3rd quarter the Cougars scored on their second play from scrimmage when Shane Acton ran 75 yards for a touchdown. The Bruins fumbled the kickoff back to HMB and the Cougars scored on the next play when Spigelman threw a touchdown pass to Brandon Inglis. The Cougars added another touchdown in the 3rd quarter on another Acton scoring run. In the 4th quarter the Cougars added two more touchdowns on a Toby Leonardos run and Cody James run.

The defense played well all night giving up two short field scores in the first half and only one late second half touchdown. The Cougars evened their record at 1-1 and will be traveling to Gilroy High School next Friday night for another non-league game.

The JV football team also evened their record at 1-1 with a 38-6 win over Santa Clara. The Junior Cougars dominated the Bruins from start to finish. Andrew Olivero caught two touchdown passes and Jack Cartwright added another touchdown catch. Chase Hofmann ran for two touchdowns and Jake Quosig also had a touchdown run.

Both teams travel to Gilroy High School next week. The JV game begins at 5:00 and the Varsity game kicks off at 7:30. The players and coaches from both teams hope to see the stands filled with orange and black to support your Cougars.

Community Cougar : Mr. Stagg

This week's Community Cougar is Science and Physics teacher Mr. Ryan Stagg. Mr. Stagg is a UC Santa Cruz graduate. His teaching style is intended to teach our students logic and problem solving. His sense of humor is also what gets his students engaged and interested in what he is trying to teach. Mr. Stagg is a favorite among the football players and the coaches and players are excited to have Mr. Stagg as this week's Community Cougar.

Cougar Pride Always!
