Success for Both Teams

It was another exciting and successful football Friday for both Cougars football teams at Woodside High School. The varsity team remained undefeated and improved to 7-0 and 3-0 with a 28-6 win over the Wildcats. After Woodside jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, the Cougars put together an impressive drive which culminated with sophomore Chase Hofmann scoring his first touchdown of the game and after the extra point the Cougars had a 7-6 lead. On the next Woodside possession senior Jim Alves blocked a punt which led to another Hofmann touchdown and the Cougars had a 14-6 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter Hofmann added his third touchdown of the game and HMB took a 21-6 lead into the fourth quarter. The Cougars put the game away in the 4th quarter when sophomore quarterback Gavin Tomberlin found senior Pablo Gutierrez in the end zone for a touchdown which completed the scoring and gave the Cougars a decisive 28-6 win.

The JV team got back in the win column to improve their record to 6-1 and 2-1 with a 26-20 win over Woodside on Friday afternoon. The young Cougars took an early lead when Jacob Quosig returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give HMB a 6-0 lead. After a Woodside field goal the Cougars scored another touchdown on the second play from scrimmage when Quosig broke several tackles on his way to a long scoring run. After a 2pt. conversion from Jakob Meighen to Hayden Von Almen, the young Cougars led 14-3. Later in the 2nd quarter Blaze Dayton added another touchdown and HMB had a 3 score halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter Woodside made the game close at 20-13 but the Cougars scored again in the 4th when Dom Padua scored a touchdown and the Cougars had a 26-13 lead. Woodside answered with their own touchdown and it was 26-20. HMB could not get a first down that would have run out the clock, and it took a defensive stand by the young Cougars who forced a fumble to hang on to the victory.

Both teams are back in action on Friday night taking on Hillsdale High School on Teacher Appreciation Night. The JV game begins at 4:00 and the varsity game kicks off at 7:00. Both teams hope to see a full house at John Francis Field to cheer on our Cougars and show our awesome teachers how much they mean to our community.
