COUGARS MAUL BURLINGAME PANTHERS 39-15

Facing the first league challenge of the year, the Half Moon Bay Cougars were victorious against Burlingame High School with a score of 39-15. 

Getting the game started was #21 Chase Hofmann, who rumbled in and over a Burlingame defender for an 8 yard TD run. QB Gavin Tomberlin scored a 2 point conversion with a quick rush into the endzone. Gavin then had the next score in the game, taking an option play 2 yards for the score. Chase Hofmann scored three more 1 yard rushing TDs during the game, with Dylan Williams hitting a 46 yard field goal.

Overall, QB Gavin Tomberlin was 10 for 16 on the night for 104 yards, along with rushing for 21 yards. The receiving corps had four equally solid performances from Jake Quosig, Hayden Von Almen, Dan Padua, and Dylan Williams. Each had 20+ yards receiving, with Jake Quosig having the longest reception of the game at 29 yards.Chase Hofmann ended up with 90 yards rushing along with his 4 TDs, and Jake Quosig earned 21 yards on the ground as well. As the game entered the 4th quarter, Ronan Spigelman came into the game to hit on 3 dive plays to help put the Panthers away.

The Panthers did have 2 breakout touchdowns during the game; an 80 yard run and a 66 yard pass. The score at one point in the 2nd quarter was 18-15, but the Cougars stuck to their tried and true game plan and simply wore out the Panther defense. 

On the defensive side of the ball, #12 Tristan Hofmann was a machine, flying all over the field for 8 tackles, 1 assist, and 1 sack, which was a massive hit on the Burlingame QB who tried to scramble out of the pocket. #15 Jonathan Carrillo also had a fantastic game, getting a critical sack and also recovering a fumble. Also having a great play on the game was #13 Sean Fitzgerald. Burlingame tried a fake punt early in the game, but Sean was ready, intercepting the pass and returning it 55 yards, which led to the first score of the game.

The JV Cougars got off to a great start in league with a 22-12 victory over the Panthers of Burlingame. Running back, Blake Schmieder started the scoring with a touchdown run. Slot back, Connor Quosig, added two more touchdowns to his season total. The Cougars elected to go for a 2-point coversion and were successful with a little trickery. Cade Duncan threw quick pass to Connor Quosig, who then pitched the ball to kicker, Oz Monroy, on a hook-and-ladder to complete the conversion. Monroy converted on both of his point-after attempts as well. Although, the offense was great, the game was won by the team effort of the Cougar defense. Lineman, Atticus Hart, forced a fumble that was recovered by Schmieder on kick-off coverage that helped swing the momentum towards HMB early in the game and the Cougars never looked back.

The Cougars have selected Robin and Lois Baird as this week's Community Cougars. Robin graduated from Half Moon Bay High School in 1958. Lodie was a sophomore at HMBHS the first year the school moved to its current location on the hill. She served as the homecoming queen and graduated in 1965.  Lodie's father Bob Peterson served as a member of the CUSD Board. Their sons are both HMBHS graduates.  Matt graduated in 1998 and David graduated in 1989. They are the grandparents of alumni, Sean Baird (2017) and senior Arron Baird. Their grandchildren are 4th generation HMBHS graduates. Robin and Lodie host HMBHS class reunions and Taco Night for the football players. They never miss a football game! 

Coming up next for the Cougars will be facing Sacred Heart Prep. This will be a Saturday game at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. The Gators are 1-5 on the year, but will put up a great fight against the Cougars. JV kicks off at 11AM, with Varsity being rescheduled to 2:30 PM. Go Cougars!
