Cougars disarm aragon dons 21-14

The match was set, two undefeated teams, looking to exit the game with a perfect record and continue to be the dominant force in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division. As the 4th quarter ended, the Half Moon Bay Cougars sat victorious against the Aragon Dons, playing a hard fought game to a 21-14 victory.

On the 2nd play of the game, #21 Chase Hofmann took the ball and raced 90 yards for a Cougar touchdown. The Dons came back to tie up the game 7-7 with a 3 yard rushing touchdown. However, the Cougars came back on the next possession, scoring a touchdown on a 35 yard pass from #8 QB Gavin Tomberlin to #11 Dylan Williams, that was set up with a 36 yard kickoff return by #12 Tristan Hofmann. From there, Half Moon Bay never looked back. In the 3rd quarter, the Cougars went up 21-7 with another touchdown pass from QB Gavin Tomberlin to #27 Hayden Von Almen. The Dons made several attempts to tie the game up, getting one more score in the 4th quarter, but the Cougars kept fighting and held onto the victory.

It was a evenly-matched game, with both teams gaining equal yardage on the ground, but it was the Cougar defense that dug deep in the 2nd half. The Dons unleashed a punishing rushing attack, but each time the defense, led by #58 Kellen Royce (9 total tackles, 1 TFL), and #12 Tristan Hofmann (9 total tackles), along with the rest of the front 7, stepped up and made stops when they needed them. The Dons had one more possession at the end of the game, but thanks to pressure from #50 JoJo Weinberger, the pass was thrown short, allowing #13 Sean Fitzgerald to intercept the pass and put the game away.

The Half Moon Bay Cougars are now 8-0 on the season, and lead the Bay Division.

This week’s Community Cougar is the entire Seaton Family.  Many of the Seaton Family are alumni of Half Moon Bay High School.  When they played here, they symbolized what it means to play Cougar Football.  They were often not the biggest, fastest, or strongest, but they did play with the most heart and that was enough. Audrey was a team mom for many years.  Currently, the Seatons continue to support our program in many ways including working the chains for all the varsity home games.

Next up for the Cougars is the annual Skull Game against rival Terra Nova on Friday, November 3rd. The Tigers are 4-3 on the season, but are in the midst of a 3 game losing streak. However, with rivalry games, this will be a tough and exciting game. The games will be at Terra Nova High School in Pacifica on Friday November 3, with the JV team starting at 5PM, and Varsity kicking off at 7:30PM. Go Cougars!
