cougars win 2017 season kickoff

The HMBHS Cougars have kicked off the 2017 season with a decisive 63-7 victory over Saratoga High. Starting fast and keeping the momentum going strong throughout, the Cougars excelled in all areas of the game. Offensively, the team gained 368 yards, splitting 162 yards passing and 206 yards rushing. Gavin Tomberlin got things going in the 1st quarter with a 8 yard TD run. He had another TD run in the 3rd quarter, and threw for 162 yards on 7 completions, with no interceptions, including a spot on TD pass to Hayden Von Alman in the 3rd quarter. Chase Hoffman had 3 TD runs as well, leading the Cougars in scoring while gaining 41 yards on 7 carries. Tristan Hoffman and Ronan Spigelman also added TD runs in the 2nd half. Jake Quosig had a fantastic all-around game, carrying the ball for 8 yards while catching 2 passes for 80 yards.

Big plays on the defensive side of the ball were also on order, keeping the Falcons to negative rushing yards and out of the endzone till the last series of the game. Leading the defense was freshman Tristan Hoffman, who along with 4 tackles had 1 sack and a forced fumble, ending up with the ball in his hands on a great strip tackle. Juan Vasquez was also a fixture in the Falcon’s backfield with 1 sack and 2 tackles for loss. All together, the defense had 5 sacks, forced 2 fumbles, and kept the Falcon’s offense sputtering the entire game.

Having a career day was Dylan Williams. Not only was he a perfect 7 for 7 on PATs, but he also was 2 for 2 on FG attempts, and ran the ball in for a 2 point conversion on the first TD of the game.

The JV Cougars got off to a slow start to the 2017 season with a 28-40 loss to the Saratoga Falcons JV squad. The Cougars went into the half down 6-34. The solo passing score of the half was from the arm of quarterback, Cade Duncan, connecting with slot back, Connor Quosig.

The young Cougars squad executed much better in the 2nd half, outscoring the Falcons 22-6. Duncan connected with slot back, Sean Nugent, for one score and wide receiver, Oz Monroy, on another, finishing the day with his 3rd passing touchdown. Connor Quosig took a pitch early in the 4th quarter for his 2nd score of the day. Quosig and Nugent also capped all scoring with rushing in for a pair of 2-point conversions. The 2nd half push was not enough for the victory, however, as the young Cougars fell to the Falcons.

A huge thank you to Week 1 Community Cougar, Superintendent, Jane Yuster. Superintendent Yuster set precedent for upcoming Community Cougars by attending chalk talk along with practice.  We are extremely lucky as a football community to have her support.

Please help the entire football program congratulate Week 2 Community Cougar, Len Tomberlin.  Len is a Half Moon Bay High School alumni as well as quarterback, Gavin Tomberlin’s father. No one is more passionate about Cougar Football than Len.  Len is our number one promoter.  When Len is not doing favors for our high school program, he can be found on the field, coaching the Pop Warner program.
