Cougars scorch Vikings 48-7

The weather was not the only thing blazing on Friday, as the HMBHS Cougars scorched the Palo Alto High Vikings with a 48-7 win. Facing a delay in the start of the game due to the excessive heat, the Cougars started fast, racking up 4 touchdowns in the 1st quarter. Chase Hoffman had the first 2 TDs of the game, with runs of 3 and 2 yards. Gavin Tomberlin then capped the 1st quarter scores with 2 passing TD’s to Hayden Von Almen and Tristan Hofmann. As the game progressed, the offense continued to have great field position to start each drive, gaining 324 yards and a 83% 3rd down conversion rate. The stellar Cougar defense held Palo Alto to 227 total yards, and a paltry 23% 3rd down conversion rate. Jonathan Carrillo had a fantastic game, logging 5 tackles and a key sack to stop a drive. Palo Alto had only 5 completed passes on 19 attempts, most of which were deep passes that showed signs of desperation to make something happen against the stifling coverage and front pressure from the Cougar defense all game. As the game progressed, the Cougar running attack wore down Palo Alto, with Chase Hoffman ending any momentum recovery by the Vikings with a 30 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter, and adding 2 more rushing TDs in the 3rd quarter. Ronan Spiegelman came in at dive back to secure the win, rushing for 28 yards on 5 carries.

The JV Cougars suffered their 2nd defeat of the season, going down to the Palo Alto Vikings 39-8. Turnovers by the offense killed the early momentum for the Cougars, but the defense played with a lot of resilience and pride despite the early deficit from playing on their side of the field for much of the game. The lone score for the Cougars was pass from quarterback, Cade Duncan, connecting with slot, Sean Nugent, on a seam route. The Cougars elected to go for 2 points, and the attempt was successful with Duncan connecting with Nugent once again.

Please help us in congratulating this week's Community Cougar, Team Mom, Julie Baird.  Julie handles all communications for our football program as well as organizes team meals for our players.  Julie is an HMBHS graduate (class of '92) whose husband, Dave, played for the Cougars (class of '89) as well as her oldest son, Sean (class of '17). Her youngest son, Arron, is currently a senior on the team.

The Cougars have their first home game of the season coming up on Friday night against  Capuchino High School. Capuchino is also 2-0 on the season, so this will be a great match-up. JV starts at 5:00 pm and the Varsity will kick off at 7:30 pm.
