Back and Forth contest ends in Skull Game loss

The varsity and JV football teams completed their regular seasons on Friday at a packed John Francis Field against the rival Terra Nova Tigers in the annual "Skull Game". Unfortunately, both teams ended with a loss. The varsity game was an exciting back and forth contest that featured 6 lead changes before the Cougars fell to the Tigers by the score of 35-31. Chase Hofmann got HMB on the score board early with a touchdown to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead. Terra Nova came right back with a score to take the lead at 7-6. The Tigers added another score to increase their lead to 14-6. In the 2nd quarter Gavin Tomberlin scored a touchdown and Jake Quosig converted on a 2 point try and the game was tied at 14-14. Before halftime TN scored again and held a 21-14 lead. In the 3rd quarter Tomberlin scored again and the game was tied at 21-21. Sean Fitzgerald added a field goal and the Cougars had a 24-21 lead. The Tigers answered again with a TD and reclaimed the lead at 28-24. In the 4th quarter Tomberlin threw a touchdown pass to Hofmann and HMB took the lead at 31-28. Terra Nova again drove down the field with the help of a 15 yard penalty that put the Tigers in scoring position. TN scored the go ahead touchdown with less then 5 minutes left in the game to take a 35-31 lead. HMB had a chance to score but were unable to convert a 4th down to keep the drive alive. The Tigers made 2 first downs and were able to run out the clock to secure the victory and keep the skull for another year. The Cougars completed their season at 8-2 and will play in the first round of the CCS playoffs next week. Time and opponent to be determined.

The JV team completed their season in disappointing fashion with a 60-18 loss to the Tigers. HMB took an early 6-0 lead on a run by Kolby Dare but the Tigers then exploded for 28 straight points in the 1st quarter. Dare later found Sean Nugent for a touchdown. In the 4th quarter Cade Duncan, who replaced injured quarterback Dare, scored for the young Cougars but the game was out of hand early for HMB. The JV team completed their season at 3-6-1.
