Varsity Season Not Over

Both of the Half Moon Bay Cougars football teams completed their regular season on a cold football Friday at Tigers Field. This year's annual Skull Game was played on the road at Terra Nova High School and featured several big plays by both teams. The varsity football team completed their regular season falling to 8-2 and 4-1 with a 38-28 loss to the Tigers. The Cougars took a 14-7 halftime lead on a quarterback sneak by Gavin Tomberlin and a Tomberlin to Pablo Gutierrez touchdown pass. The Tigers took the lead at 17-14 in the 3rd quarter. The two teams exchanged touchdowns the rest of the game with another touchdown from Tomberlin to Gutierrez. The Tigers took a 17 point lead in the final minutes before Gutierrez returned a kick off 92 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 10 but the onside kick was recovered by Terra Nova. The Cougars were able to get the ball back but with no time outs left they ran out of time.

The season is not over for our varsity team as they will now prepare for a first round playoff game next week at HMBHS.  HMBHS (seeded #2) will take on San Lorenzo Valley (seeded #7) at Half Moon Bay High School on Friday at 7:00 pm.

The JV team completed a historical season on Friday by defeating the Tigers 20-6 to finish their season 9-1. The young Cougars defense was dominant all day keeping Terra Nova's offense out of the endzone and compiling 7 sacks. The offense got the JV team on the scoreboard in the 1st quarter on a touchdown run by Blaze Dayton. The young Cougars scored again in the 2nd quarter on a touchdown pass from Jakob Meighen to Hayden Von Almen to take a 14-0 lead. After the Tigers cut the lead to 14-6 on an interception return, the young Cougars added another touchdown by Jacob Quosig to make the score 20-6.

It was a fantastic season for the JV Cougars who fell one quarter short of a perfect season and a league title. The JV coaches would like to thank all of the JV players for their hard work and great effort on game day and wish the sophomores good luck as they become varsity football players.
