Win Against an "A" League Opponent

The varsity football team improved its record to 2-0 on this young 2016 season with a 43-34 win over the Burlingame High Panthers. The Cougars jumped out to an early 22-0 lead when Chase Hofmann returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown; after a 2 point conversion, HMB lead 8-0. The defense got the Cougars on the scoreboard again when Dom Padua intercepted a pass at the Panther 35 yard line and returned it for a touchdown to give HMB a 15-0 lead before running a single offensive play. Padua then recovered a fumble on Burlingame's next series setting up a touchdown run by Jake Quosig and a 22-0 lead. The Panthers came right back with two quick touchdowns and after the first quarter HMB held a 22-14 lead. Hofmann scored another touchdown to give the Cougars a 29-14 halftime lead. Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the 3rd quarter with Quosig scoring his second touchdown for HMB and the Cougars had a 36-21 lead after 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter HMB controlled the clock and added another touchdown by Hofmann. Burlingame scored two touchdowns in the quarter but failed on a 2 point conversion attempt and HMB held a 9 point lead. The Panthers moved down the field late but the Cougars defense kept them out of the endzone and HMB had their second win of the season against an "A" league opponent.

The JV football team also played the Panthers on Friday afternoon and although the young Cougars played well most of the game, their inexperience and failure to get off the field at crucial times cost them a chance at victory. The JV scored its first touchdown of the season in the 3rd quarter on a Ronan Spigelman touchdown and scored again in the 4th quarter on a touchdown pass from Kolby Dare to Danny Mack. The young Cougars fell to 0-2 with a 26-12 loss.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Capuchino High School to take on the Mustangs. The JV game begins at 4:00 and the varsity game will kickoff at 7:00.

The entire football program would like to thank our week #2 Community Cougar Rachael Daly. We hope she enjoyed the front row experience during the game.

The players and coaches would like to congratulate this week's Community Cougars, our game day film crew. A big thank you to Derek France, Gary Ballard and Pete Royce. These 3 make it possible for our players and coaches to point out the good and bad from the previous night's game. It is this ability that helps to make our team better each week. New this season is the ability to see plays on the field right after they happen so that the coaches and players can make in- game adjustments.

For those of you who haven't heard, Chase Hofmann was named the Week 1 49ers High School Player of the Week for his performance against Saratoga. Here is the link:
