The Varsity football team won a classic rivalry game on Friday Night over our arch rivals the Terra Nova Tigers. With 2 minutes left in the game the Cougars took the ball at their own 20 yard line and moved down the field converting 2 fourth down plays to keep the drive alive. The biggest conversion coming when Acton found James Cartwright for a 24 yard completion and a first and goal at the Tigers 3 yard line. On fourth and goal at the 1 yard line and 1.8 seconds left in the game DeMartini tied the game at 48-48. Pierre Salinas kicked the extra point for the Cougars first lead of the game. After an exciting kick off coverage the Cougars had a hard fought and exciting 49-48 victory. It was a great celebration on the field and awesome support from our student body in the stands. Shane Acton threw two touchdown passes, the first to James Cartwright and the second to Pablo Gutierrez. The third touchdown came on the ground when Anthony DeMartini scored on a 5 yard run to complete a 17 play drive. It was the poor special teams play by the Cougars that put the team in a difficult situation. The Cougars lost to Monterey by the score of 48-23.

The JV team also opened their season on Friday in Monterey and played well against the Toreadors, coming up short in a 36-34 loss. The JV Cougars mounted a strong second half comeback and were led by Sam Terraszas who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Jack Cartwright also scored twice for the JV team and Chase Hoffman added another score for HMB.

Scrimmage

To All Cougars Football Families and Friends ,

The Half Moon Bay Cougars football teams began their seasons on Friday night when they hosted the annual four way scrimmage at John Francis Field. This year's participants were Carlmont High, El Camino High and Mission High School from San Francisco. The evening's action began with the JV team playing at 5:00. The JVs played well especially on defense where they limited the others teams' ability to sustain any drives down field. Head Coach Ronnie Ekis was especially pleased with the active and aggressive play of his defense.

The Varsity football team took the field at 7:00 and began with a spirited scrimmage against the El Camino Colts. The Cougars scored on their first three offensive possessions with a solid ground attack and positive production through the air. Shane Acton was especially accurate with his passing from both the pocket and on the run as he threw for two touchdowns against the Colts. The Cougars defense stifled the El Camino offense with their swarming hard hitting play.

The Cougars scrimmaged Carlmont in the second round and continued what they had started earlier by out hitting and out hustling the Scots. The third scrimmage of the evening was against Mission High from San Francisco. Mission provided a real test for the Cougars defense, especially the secondary. Mission's offense is a pass first run second style that likes to stretch the field and strives for big plays. Their quarterback is elusive and has a strong arm. This combination was a good learning experience for the Cougars second team defense. The Varsity team played well and was able to score twice against the Mission defense.

Both teams have continued to improve over the course of double days and the first week of after school practice. The teams will need to continue to work hard and get better this week as they prepare for their first pre-season game on the road against the Monterey High Toreadores. Monterey returns several starters on both sides of the ball and will be a real challenge for the Cougars. Kickoff for the JV game is scheduled for 5:15 with the Varsity game beginning at 7:30.

The Cougars have worked hard all off season and are extremely excited about this upcoming season and look forward to improving upon last year's record. The players and coaches hope to see your strong orange and black presence next Friday in Monterey.

Community Cougar : Susan Royce

Susan Royce, a Varsity Cheer coach, has volunteered countless hours to support  Cougar Football.  On top of coaching cheer, Susan runs our highly successful annual Casino Night and our annual Carnival/Movie Night. The Cougar Football program would like to thank Susan for all that she does for our players.
